Antique Silver Monstarance

This 18th Century Silver Gilt Monstrance is a beautiful piece of Portuguese colonial workmanship. Used in the Catholic church for the exhibition of the consecrated Eucharistic host during Mass, it is an integral part of Communion in the Christian faith. Decorated with enamel and semi precious stones, it shows clear influences from the baroque period, showing a sunburst surrounding a clear circular pane of glass within which the sacred host is encased, surrounded by silver rays plated in gold. This piece is an authentic hand made antique, with distinctive rays emanating from the center, along with two forms of the fleur de lis. It features the cross on top, with floral embellishments throughout. The central pane is first circled in a ring of gems, followed by an ornate circle of gilded flowers, out of which come the rays of light. It tapers down towards the base and then expands, forming a flat surface to rest on that is quite intricately decorated itself. Standing about three feet high, this would be an esteemed addition to any Church, and would show the utmost dedication in any home that houses it.
