This Navagraha set is a typical idol placed at the bottom of temple flagstaffs in south India. Both these items are intrinsic to Hindu lore, but the combination of the two is most often seen in Shiva temples, where the flag staff, or the kodi maram, is used to hoist a cloth flag depicting Nandi, the vehicle of Shiva. The Navagraha, usually placed at the base, are considered the major cosmic influencers. They represent Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, the Sun and the Moon, and Rahu and Ketu, the nodes of the moon. This piece, crafted in the 18th century, is made of oxidized brass, and is circular to fit around the base of the flagstaff. The eight figures are evenly spaced out, and sit in their auspicious positions, facing outwards. In tandem with Hindu beliefs, this is a piece of Hindu culture that would bring luck and grace to any space it occupies.
