Lord Krishna, according to Hindu Mythology, held particular reverence for the beauty of shepherd or cowherding girls. These women, in turn, worshipped Krishna unconditionally with utmost love. There are rumoured to be anywhere between 108 to 16000 Gopis. Radha is always seen as the supreme, and most loved by Krishna. Another eight Gopis, who were also Krishna's contemporaries were also highly exalted. This painting depicts Krishna with two of them - Lalita Sakhi and Indulekha Sakhi. Dressed in deep royal colours, they are held by Krishna with a posessive arm around each. Showing platonic and yet deep love, this painting is a reminder of the intricate nature of Hindu Mythology and a testament to our faith and love for Lord Krishna.
